Make Contact

Here's How it Works

Contact your senators and representatives about Head Start reauthorization. We've provided hotlinks to legislative sites, as well as a letter and a phone script as a guide.

For e-mail messages

  1. Copy the sample letter here.
  2. Determine the legislator you want to contact.
  3. Go to the appropriate link (below) for the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives or for your State House or Senate.
  4. Find your senator or representative by zip code, state, district or name, as requested on the site.
  5. Go to the appropriate contact button for that individual and create an e-mail message.
  6. Paste the letter in.
  7. Customize the letter as you wish, providing the requested name and address information.
    Push send.

For U.S. Mail letters

  1. If you use Microsoft Word, click on the Word file provided here, sampleletter.doc, to download and save to your hard drive.
  2. OR, if you use another program, click on the sample letter and copy the text in the box. Then, open a word processing document and paste the letter into it.
  3. Determine the legislator you wish to contact.
  4. Go to the appropriate link (below) for the U.S. Senate, House of Representatives, or your State House or Senate.
  5. Find your senator or representative by zip code, state, district or name, as requested on the site.
  6. Copy the name and address of the legislator. Note: because of heightened Washington postal security precautions, it is quicker and more effective to mail letters to your legislator's local office.
  7. Customize the letter to add your own thoughts, points of view and any personal experiences you have had or know about that might demonstrate your ideas.
  8. Be sure to include your name and address.
  9. Print the letter and sign it.
  10. Stamp and mail the letter to the correct address (preferably the legislator's local office).
